Women's Network - 23 May 2007

At today's networking event, Marcia McKerrow gave us a refreshing session on how to move from A to B. How did you find her presentation? And the rest of the event? I really welcome your feedback so please post a comment below.

Details that make the difference

One of the things that the network is known for is having a tastier-than-usual lunch. As someone who does a lot of networking I was keen to avoid the things that depress me about networking events (such as grim food) and to incorporate the little touches that make a difference. For example, at the very first event, I heard someone say "You can tell this is organised by women - there's somewhere to hang your coat."

Are there any other fine details that you've noticed at other networking (or, indeed, other) events that make them that bit more easy to enjoy?

Feedback on the Nottingham Women's Network

Many thanks for visiting this blog. It's really helpful to me to get feedback on the network and now that there are so many more women involved I thought I'd start this semi-formal way of collecting it. Please let me have your comments - by clicking on 'comments' !

What's Technorati?

You'll see on the right hand side-bar a little button that says 'Add this blog to my Technorati favourites'. But what's it all about?

Technorati - www.technorati.com - is a site which tracks the popularity of blogs and one way to indicate this is to click on that link and register this blog as a 'favourite'.

So what's the point?

Well briefly, the more highly rated a blog is, the more people will visit it. And the more women who visit this blog, the more will find out about the network. And the more that find out about the network, the more women we'll all have to network with.

So, go on. Give it a click.

Previous events at the Women's Network

The Business Women's Network at the View from the top Gallery has been running since March 2006. Here's a snapshot of some of the things that have been happening.

Wednesday 25 April 2007
More financial issues at April's events - this time about ensuring that your business is operating in the most tax efficient way possible. Jill Evenden and Eithne Cantwell from EBS highlighted some of the key issues including whether to operate as self-employed or to go limited.

Wednesday 21 March 2007
March's Nottingham Women's Network promted eager discussion of how to get backing from the bank. Kate Matthew and Julie Nicholson from NatWest ably fielded questions from the audience and gave us some very useful insights into how the banks make their decisions about supporting businesses.

Wednesday 28 February 2007
February's network saw Rosemary Mullen-Pearson sharing her - sometimes challenging - views on the differences in support for business in the UK and the States. With plenty of experience of both sides of the Atlantic under her belt, it was a great opportunity to share a perspective on business that we don't get the chance to hear everywhere.

Wednesday 24 January 2007
Kicking off the New Year was Shirley Skeels of Horizon Financial who did a great job of outlining our priorities for managing our money and getting the most out of our business finances.
They said: "Great contacts. I've already found out how to cut my bank charges and I'm going to follow Shirley's advice with the money I've saved."

Wednesday 6 December 2006
We had a bit of festive fun at this event with gifts of wisdom gleaned through the year and more prizes in a game of pass the parcel, all topped off with a celebratory glass of bubbly. Not a typical View from the Top event, but then Christmas comes but once a year.

Wednesday 15 November 2006
November's View from the Top offered something a little different to celebrate Women's Enterprise Day. To kick-start the Women's Enterprise Wish List, there were ideas ranging from the practical to the provocative.
If you couldn't make it to the event you can still join in growing the Wish List at
http://womensenterprisewishlist.blogspot.com.

Wednesday 18 October 2006
Giving her "View from the Top" in October was Amanda McConnell of Unique Alternatives who spoke about how she grasped the nettle of her marketing challenges to put her right on track to building a successful business.

Wednesday 6 September 2006
Giving her "View from the Top" was Samina Gordon of Simple Solutions 4u, sharing her thoughts on how the effective use of IT can give you "Business Efficiency and Peace of Mind". In our "exit poll" most women said they'd be tackling some IT issues straight away, some were honest enough to say they should but they'll probably take a while to get round to it, and a lucky few have someone else to worry about that stuff for them!
They said: "Excellent meeting; really liked the interview format."

Wednesday 5 July 2006
Giving her "View from the Top" was Jean Shaw, from Princples HR, who shared with us some of the ups and downs she's experienced over the last 10 years in business and showed us "How to Enjoy Running Your Own Business."

Wednesday 7 June 2006
Giving her" View from the Top", and a thought-provoking one it was too, was Rosjke Hasseldine, from The Silent Female Scream Revolution , challenging us to think about: "Are You Charging Enough for Your Time and Expertise?"
They said: "She's really got something there!"

Wednesday 10 May 2006
Giving her View from the Top, and making us all think a little differently about our lives, was Elizabeth Juffs of ej life coaching, talking about "Your Pefect Life".

She said: "There was a lovely buzz in the room."

Wednesday 5 April 2006
Giving her "View from the Top", as well as some handy style tips, was Pippa Rees, Style Consultant and Personal Brand specialist, talking about "Your First Impression: Imperative for Impact".
She said:"I think you have done an amazing job in getting so many people together over such a short period of time... continue spreading the word."
They said: "Great meeting on Wednesday. It was just buzzing. I went to another networking event on Thursday and it just wasn't the same."

Wednesday 1 March 2006
Giving her "View from the Top" was Sam Gemmell, MD of
Creative Media Matrix, an entrepreneur active in public life, ideally qualified to entertain us with stories of "Fabulous Women and their Fabulous Businesses".
She said: "I enjoyed the event and the opportunity to share my passion."
They said: "Sam was a great speaker... the best networking event I've ever been to."
